Workshops

Of All the Gall!

(7-12 year olds)

Have you ever seen an oak gall? Maybe you have but haven't known what it was. Sometimes called Oak apples, these round growths hang from oak trees like fruit. But why are they there and what causes them? During this workshop will hunt for some of the 200 different galls that grow on oak trees; some as tiny and delicate as a snowflake others as big as, well, an apple! We'll learn what causes them and why.  As we hunt for oak galls around the park, we'll learn about the history of oak galls. We'll even use the galls to make ink just like they used for writing The Declaration of Independence! Join us for a fun informative hunt. You never know what fun and exciting things we'll discover.
